Embiid Names Son After Late Brother
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid announced yesterday that he had named his newborn son, Arthur Elijah De Paula Embiid, after his late younger brother who died in a car accident in Cameroon in 2014.
Embiid, a Cameroonian native, shared the news on social media, posting pictures of his new family, along with the heartfelt caption: "I named him after my late little brother, Arthur, who passed away from a car accident in Cameroon. My brother was certainly a fighter and a warrior, and his name means 'strength' and 'courage' in African culture. I just hope that he grows up to become everything his name embodies."
Embiid, who missed the Sixers' final stretch of the regular season due to injury, has been in the NBA bubble in Orlando with his team, where his girlfriend, Anne de Paula, gave birth to their son last week. He has since left the bubble to be with his family.
Fans and fellow NBA players flooded Embiid's social media with congratulations and well-wishes for the new father and his family. Additionally, Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown praised Embiid for choosing such a meaningful name for his son.
"It's a great honor and a great tribute to his late brother, who he loved very much," Brown said. "And it's a very special thing for him to do. We're all so happy for him and his family, and we can't wait to see little Arthur grow up and make his mark on the world."
